Ezra Keros: A story of challenges braved.

Ezra Keros a.k.a Jinakubwa, a fast rising comedian.

He is our first bubble of hope. Ezra Keros is a fast rising Kenyan comedian whose star continues to shine brighter everyday. Young as he is, he already has several achievements pegged against his name. He let us peer into his special recipe for success, with the hope of moving more to act on their unharnessed potentials. Here is a quick glimpse into a story of dreams lived and challenges braved:-

Who is Ezra Kerosi? I am a content creator, an upcoming comedian and an actor.I hail from Nyamira County- Kenya.I love doing misdirection, absurdity, observations, Sitcom (situational comedy), blue and black comedy.I do comic Spokenwords too.I am also a third year student at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton pursuing BST(Automotive).

What inspired your stage name? My official stage name is Ezra Keros aka ‘Jinakubwaa’. I was formerly known as Mzazi or Babu but I came to realise later that it’s a common name.Thereafter, I decided to use the English version on my name (my name is from the Bible,Ezra 2:45 you find Keros in English,Kerosi in Ekegusii and Swahili) I later added jinakubwaa because I used to use it alot in my ego boosters ( friends baptized me so)

When did you get into comedy? What was your inspiration? I got into comedy in 2016. I had a deep love for the Churchill show, and specifically for the late comedian Ayieyaa( May he continue to R.I.P.) Entertaining people for me, brings a mutual feeling of happiness between the performer and the audience.

Greatest achievements so far? I founded a comedy club in my university. I’ve organized two full house comedy shows that brought together big names in the industry ( seven from Churchill show) and upcoming talents that I scouted from the club we founded. I’ve represented my university in competitions(staging plays and standup comedy) I qualified to give a rendition on the national platform, but for the pandemic, which halted all activities.

How do you balance comedy with studies? It is quite a challenge. When it is time to study, that becomes my prime focus. When it’s time for drama, studies have to be put aside. Comedy consumes more time than studies actually do. I am thankful for the weekends that I get to catch up.I have to sacrifice sleeping hours in the process. When books tires the mind, comedy is my reprieve.

What’s your family’s stance on you being a comedian? Some do appreciate and some don’t as they term it as lack of focus.I am the first in the family to take this path.( The road not taken hahaha!) Most of them have received it well they support me(my direct family members). As a matter of fact, my elder sister is my biggest fan.

Where do you see yourself in five years? I believe I’ll get a great breakthrough. I believe that by this time, I’ll be somewhere in the industry, and I’ll be an inspiration to many. Currently, I leave everything to God, because He’ll help me through. Jinakubwa will make it.(I can)

Someone you look up to? I look up to Engineer Rowan Atkinson alias Johny English popularly known as Mr Bean.

Other than comedy, what other talents have you explored? I sing, I do spoken word, I write scripts for skits, Beatboxing, I draw and I also try to motivate people once in awhile.( A man of many hats indeed!)

As a bubble of hope, what would you tell upcoming talents? Where there’s a will there’s a way. When you have an interest in something, just try, you never know. Keep working on it. Above all, remember the Lord your God. Compare yourself not with others, you might end up loosing hope. In your endeavors, try doing something unique. Overcome your fears, never fear trying.

”Never fear trying” Ezra Keros.

Has comedy affected your interactions with you peers? (Laughs) Yes, Very! I have to talk to my fans in a manner they want them spoken to. It softened me up. I am nolonger violent, I am slow to anger. My interpersonal skills have also improved a great deal. It has been a journey of real growth, personally and professionally.

What has been your greatest challenge in this walk? When I started out, I tried so hard to please everyone. I realized that this really pulled me back. I overcame this urge, and I love the trajectory this has taken since. I’ve had big projects coming through, ideas, yet the finances are always the stumbling blocks.( Money is really everything).
